Policing the Rainbow

A landmark study of LGBTQ-police relations

The site we built for this National Institute of Justice-funded project presents the results of the first national probability sample with queer people at the focus of experiences and attitudes towards the police.

The team saw the opportunity to reach users who wouldn’t usually seek out academic research. A user-friendly and inviting interface was crucial. The goal was to replace the typical one-way, curated dissemination of data with a transparent, digestible experience such that people from varied points of view and stakes in the survey could see a reason to dive deeper into the information.

Working with Hannah Rebernick on design, we built this site around an interactive dashboard as the centerpiece, to visualize the data for maximum impact. This site scored a perfect 100 for performance using Google Lighthouse.
